Após 8 anos de vida em comum, Antoine (Jean-Pierre Léaud) e Christine Doinel (Claude Jade), seu último amor de Baisers volés e Domicílio Conjugal, decidem divorciar-se... Aos trinta e cinco anos, Antoine Doinel continua o mesmo adolescente de sempre. Ele se encontra com Christine, sua mulher, para assinarem os papeis do divórcio. A imprensa procura entrevistar o casal nas escadarias da Corte. No meio da multidão que se forma na ocasião, encontra-se Colette, o primeiro amor de Antoine, hoje uma advogada de renome.

After being discharged from the army for insubordination, Antoine Doinel visits his former girlfriend Christine Darbon, and her father finds a temporary job of night watchman for Antoine in a hotel. The naive Antoine is deceived by a private eye in his first night shift, and fired on the next morning. The investigator invites the clumsy Antoine to work in his company, where he is assigned for some minor jobs, until he has to investigate why the owner of a shoes store, Mr. Georges Tabard, is detested by his employees. Meanwhile Antoine falls in love for the gorgeous Mrs. Fabienne Tabard.

The story of two Kansas high school sweethearts growing up in the late 1920s through the stock market crash of 1929. Bud and Deanie are very much in love, but the pressures of sex in society creates a rift in their relationship. Bud's father encourages him to leave Deanie to find "another kind of girl" which drives Deanie into madness. She is committed into an institution while Bud reluctantly obeys his father and enrolls in Yale. The crash of '29 hits and changes the lives of both their families. Together they learn the harsh lesson of love and life in the '20s and sadly go their separate ways.
